Adeiladwyd yr eglwys ganoloesol hon o rwbel rhwng twyni tywod ar y traeth, ugain metr o'r nod penllanw - sef yr 'eglwys yn y tywod'. Mae ganddi rai o'r seiliau Cristnogol hynaf ym Mhrydain, a hon efallai yw'r eglwys hynaf gyda hanes Cristnogol parhaus. O dan ffenestr y dwyrain mae bedd y bardd enwog o Gymru, Siôn Phillips, un o gyfoedion Shakespeare, a foddodd wrth groesi rhwng Pwllheli a Llandanwg yn 1620.
